Tokyo sumo dohyo-iri ceremony introducing Japanese culture abroad

Introducing Japanese Culture Abroad: The Beauty of Sumo Dohyō-iri

At our art studio, where we create and present portrait and animal paintings, we also embrace another mission — to share Japanese culture and aesthetics with the world.

This time, we’ve uploaded a new video on YouTube featuring the Sumo Dohyō-iri, a ceremonial ring-entering ritual captured at the Tokyo Grand Sumo Tournament.

It’s our way of celebrating Japan’s living traditions and introducing them to international audiences ahead of the upcoming London Sumo Event, scheduled for October 2025 — the first in 34 years.

The Artistic Beauty of Dohyō-iri

Much like painting, the dohyo-iri ceremony is a form of art — defined by discipline, symbolism, and precise composition.

Every movement by the rikishi (sumo wrestlers), every rhythm of the taiko drum, and even the patterns on the kesho-mawashi (ceremonial apron) reflect Japan’s deep cultural sense of form and balance.

From an artist’s perspective, this ceremony embodies the aesthetics of “静と動 (Stillness and Motion)” — the same spirit that inspires many of our paintings.

Sharing Japanese Culture Abroad

As artists who portray human emotion and natural life, we believe that art and tradition are two sides of the same coin.

While our portrait and animal paintings explore individual beauty, traditions like sumo express collective beauty — a harmony that resonates across time and culture.

By sharing this video internationally, we hope to help more people discover the quiet strength and elegance of Japanese tradition — beyond language and form.

About the London Sumo Event

In October 2025, Grand Sumo will be held in London — an extraordinary cultural event that connects Japan and the world.

We’re thrilled to see such efforts bringing traditional Japanese art forms to global audiences.

Our hope is that, through visual art and digital media alike, we can continue to bridge cultures and inspire appreciation for the spirit of Japan.
